# PPC automation tools: what to buy once the platforms bid for you

[David Pombar](/about-me) · November 8, 2026 · 8 min read

Google Ads and Meta Ads now set bids, pick audiences and placements, and edit creative inside the platform. A PPC automation tool no longer earns its fee with a better bid algorithm. It earns it with what the platforms leave to you: guardrails written with your business rules, budget pacing and alerts across accounts and platforms, bulk changes, audits, and one place to control all of it.

This guide is for the head of performance who runs Google Ads and Meta Ads, often next to Microsoft Advertising, TikTok or LinkedIn, and has to decide which work to hand to a tool. It covers search and social. Amazon and retail media tools, which fill many lists of PPC tools, are a different job.

**How I compared them.** The native features of Google Ads and Meta Ads first, then five cross-platform tools, on six criteria: platforms covered, the layer each one automates, whether it works with the platform's bidding or replaces it, rules and alerts, change control, and pricing unit. Every fact comes from the vendors' and platforms' own websites and documentation, read on 8 November 2026 and linked below. I have not run a side-by-side test, so the weaknesses are what the vendors document, not benchmark results.

## What the platforms already automate, and what is left

Map the layers before you look at vendors. The platform owns some of them now; others are still yours.

| Layer | Google Ads, natively | Meta Ads, natively | What a third-party tool adds |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Bidding | [Smart Bidding](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7065882) in every auction | Bid strategies in [Advantage+ campaigns](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/advantage-campaigns) | Target and budget changes across campaigns; a few run their own bidding |
| Targeting and queries | [Performance Max](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10724817) and [AI Max](https://blog.google/products/ads-commerce/google-ai-max-for-search-campaigns/) | Advantage+ audience and placements | Little: the platforms own this layer |
| Creative | Text customization in AI Max; asset ideas from Ads Advisor | [Advantage+ creative](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads/meta-advantage-plus/creative) | Templates and variations at volume, from feeds |
| Rules and guardrails | [Automated rules](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2472779) and [scripts](https://developers.google.com/google-ads/scripts/docs/start) | [Automated rules](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/1694779440789213) | Richer conditions, more frequent checks, one engine for every platform |
| Budget across platforms | None | None | Pacing against a monthly budget; moving money between platforms |
| Alerts and audits | Rule emails; [Ads Advisor](https://blog.google/products/ads-commerce/ads-advisor-google-ads/) diagnoses | Rule notifications | Anomaly alerts and audit checks across accounts |
| Bulk changes | [Google Ads Editor](https://support.google.com/google-ads/editor/answer/2484521) | Not covered here | Launches and edits from sheets or feeds, with approvals |

The detail per platform, with dates and limits, is in the [Google Ads automation tools guide](/google-ads-automation-tools) and the [Meta Ads automation tools guide](/meta-ads-automation-tools).

The rows that stay with you are the cross-platform ones: budget across platforms, one set of rules, one place for alerts. That is where a cross-platform tool fits.

## You need a tool when the work stops fitting in each platform

Native features and a few scripts are enough for a single brand on one or two platforms. These are the signs you've outgrown them:

- **Rules you can't write natively.** Conditions that combine platform metrics with your margin, stock or CRM data.
- **Budget managed as one number.** Finance gives you a monthly figure across Google, Meta and others, and someone paces it by hand.
- **Many accounts.** An agency, or a brand with markets in separate accounts, needs the same rule or check applied everywhere.
- **Scripts that became a job.** Someone maintains a library of Google Ads scripts that nobody else can read.

If most of your spend runs in Performance Max and Advantage+ campaigns, the platform makes most decisions. A tool has less to change there, so check what it still does in those campaign types before you buy.

## The criteria that matter for a cross-platform tool

1. **Platforms covered, at equal depth.** Many tools are deep on Google and thin on Meta, or the reverse. Check the features per platform, not the logo list.
2. **Layer automated.** Rules, budget pacing, bidding, bulk launch, creative, audits, reporting.
3. **With the platform's bidding, or instead of it.** Changing targets and budgets works with Smart Bidding and Advantage+. Running your own bids competes with them.
4. **Rules: frequency, conditions and data.** How often rules run, whether they nest, and whether they can read your own data.
5. **Change control.** Approval before a change, a log, undo, and limits on what an AI agent may do.
6. **Pricing unit.** Most tools here charge by ad spend. Check whether the price rises with budget even when the work doesn't.

## Questions for the demo

1. For each of my platforms, show me one rule and one alert running today.
2. What does your tool change in a Performance Max campaign and in an Advantage+ sales campaign?
3. Can I pace one monthly budget across Google Ads and Meta Ads, and move money between them?
4. How fresh is the data your rules read, per platform?
5. Show me the change log for last week, and undo one change.
6. What can your AI features change without my approval?
7. What does the plan I'm quoted cost at twice my current spend?

## Red flags

- **"Our bidding beats the platform's"** with no test design. The burden of proof is on the vendor, and the test is an [incrementality test](/incrementality-testing), not a before-and-after chart.
- **A logo list with no feature matrix per platform.**
- **No answer for Performance Max and Advantage+**, where most automation now happens.
- **Changes without a log or an approval step.**
- **Pricing by spend with no ceiling.**

## The tools, by the job they do

Two groups: management platforms that cover search, social and more, and rule engines that span platforms. Tools that serve one platform, such as Adalysis and Opteo for Google Ads or Madgicx for Meta, are in the platform guides. Within each group, the order is alphabetical.

### Cross-channel management platforms

#### Marin Software

- **What it does:** [Marin Software](https://www.marinsoftware.com/pricing) sells three products: Connect (data), Ascend (cross-platform optimization) and One ("Automation at scale"). It covers search (Google, Microsoft, Yahoo Japan, Apple Search Ads), social (Meta, LinkedIn, Snap, Pinterest, TikTok) and retail media.
- **Ownership:** in 2025 Marin went through Chapter 11. Its [SEC filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1389002/000095017025113236/mrin-20250829.htm) says the plan took effect on 5 September 2025, cancelled the common stock and gave new equity to Kaxxa Holdings and the lender. The [Marin homepage](https://www.marinsoftware.com/) says it "has been acquired by Zax Capital".
- **Best for:** advertisers that want one tool across search, social and retail media, at mid-market list prices.
- **Not for:** buyers who need vendor stability on record. Ask about the new owner, the roadmap and the contract terms before you sign.
- **Pricing (public, November 2026):** Connect from $500 a month, Ascend from $1,000 and One from $2,000, the last two on 12-month terms. Other cards on the same page say "Contact us for a quote".

#### Optmyzr

- **What it does:** [Optmyzr](https://www.optmyzr.com/) covers Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Amazon Ads, Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads and TikTok Ads. It offers [customizable rules and script templates](https://www.optmyzr.com/solutions/automation), assisted optimization of CPA and ROAS targets, [budget pacing](https://www.optmyzr.com/solutions/budget-management/), [KPI and budget alerts](https://www.optmyzr.com/solutions/monitoring/), audits, reports and an MCP server.
- **Best for:** teams and agencies whose spend is mostly search, with social alongside, who want rules without code.
- **Not for:** social-heavy teams on the entry plan: Essentials gets single-account social tools only.
- **Pricing (public, November 2026):** [by monthly ad spend](https://www.optmyzr.com/pricing/), starting at $209 a month at list price; Enterprise on quote.

#### Skai

- **What it does:** [Skai](https://skai.io/omnichannel-platform/), formerly Kenshoo, calls itself an "agent-native omnichannel marketing platform" for search, retail media and social. On search it runs [its own bidding](https://skai.io/search/) and portfolio optimization, budget pacing, automated actions, scheduled reports and audits.
- **Best for:** enterprise advertisers with large search and retail media budgets that want one platform and its own bidding.
- **Not for:** mid-market budgets: the entry plan is priced for up to $4M a year of spend.
- **Pricing (public, November 2026):** [from $114,000 a year](https://skai.io/pricing/) (spend up to $4M) to $756,000 (up to $35M); above that, on quote.

### Rule engines and launch automation across platforms

#### Birch (formerly Revealbot)

- **What it does:** [Birch](https://bir.ch/pricing) runs rules with nested conditions, checked every 15 minutes, on Meta, Google, Snapchat and TikTok, and launches ads in bulk from Drive or Sheets. It was [renamed from Revealbot](https://bir.ch/blog/revealbot-is-now-birch) in October 2024.
- **Best for:** teams whose spend is mostly social and who want one rule engine across platforms.
- **Not for:** search work such as keyword audits, ad testing or Microsoft Advertising.
- **Pricing (public, November 2026):** by monthly ad spend, from $49 a month; automated rules need Pro, from $99.

#### Smartly

- **What it does:** [Smartly](https://www.smartly.io/media-suite) launches and manages campaigns from feeds across social channels, with "automated triggers", creative templates and predictive budget allocation. It also covers connected TV and open-web channels.
- **Best for:** large advertisers that produce creative at volume across Meta, TikTok, Pinterest and Snapchat.
- **Not for:** teams that want a public price or a self-serve start: it is sold through a demo.
- **Pricing (public, November 2026):** not public; demo only.

## Side by side

| | Birch | Marin Software | Optmyzr | Skai | Smartly |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Platforms (vendor's list) | Meta, Google, Snapchat, TikTok | Search, social, retail, DSPs | Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok | "300+ channels" | Social, CTV, open web |
| Rules | Nested, every 15 minutes | Not verified | Custom rules, script templates | Automated actions | Optimization triggers |
| Bidding | Not verified | Cross-platform optimization | Works on platform targets | Own algorithm | Budget allocation |
| Budget pacing | Not verified | Not verified | Yes | Yes | Predictive allocation |
| Pricing unit (November 2026) | Ad spend | Per product, from $500 a month | Ad spend | Annual ad spend tiers | Not public |

"Not verified" means the vendor's site didn't say it on 8 November 2026, not that the feature is missing.

## Automation amplifies the conversion signal you send

Every layer above learns from your conversions or reacts to them. A broken tag, a consent banner that cuts signal, or duplicated events make Smart Bidding, Advantage+ and every third-party rule act on the wrong numbers, and faster than a person would.

Check the signal before you automate more: the [Meta Conversions API guide](/meta-conversions-api) covers deduplication and event match quality on Meta. On Google, data exclusions let you remove a broken period from bidding, as the Google Ads guide explains.

## Which one fits which team

The "Best for" fields map to these cases:

- **Mostly search, social alongside:** Optmyzr, or a search tool from the [Google Ads guide](/google-ads-automation-tools).
- **Mostly social, several platforms:** Birch for rules and launches; Smartly when creative volume is the bottleneck.
- **Enterprise search and retail media:** Skai.
- **Search, social and retail in one tool at mid-market list prices:** Marin Software, after checking the ownership and contract terms.

## What to check this week

- **Fill in the layer table for your accounts.** Mark which rows the platforms already handle and which take your team's time.
- **Price your shortlist at today's spend and at double it.** Most tools here charge by spend.
- **Ask each vendor for the change log of a live account.** If they can't show one, that is the answer.
